Sealed Events

Administrative Order 23-AO-0002-P and Local Rule 5 address sealed documents.  For a complete list of sealed documents, please refer to the following lists:

List of Documents Automatically Sealed by the CM/ECF System

List of Documents Automatically Sealed After an Order Grants a Party's Motion for Leave to File a Document Under Seal

The above lists of documents are comprehensive, that is, they include all sealed documents that are filed by court users or attorneys.  Each list contains three categories of documents with the specific restriction levels of Docket Text Public (DTP), No Public Access (NPA) and Court Only Access (COA).

The CM/ECF system has three specific restriction categories for criminal and civil events that apply to sealed documents and/or docket entries:

Docket Text Public (DTP): The text for this entry will appear on the public docket, but the document is only accessible by the court and case participants when applicable.

No Public Access (NPA): The text for this entry will not appear on the public docket, and the document is only accessible by the court and case participants when applicable.

Court Only Access (COA):  The text for this entry will not appear on the public docket, and the document is only accessible by the court.

There are three new menus in the CM/ECF system for civil and criminal filings. These three menus correlate with the specific restriction categories for criminal and civil sealed events and are titled as follows:

Sealed Document – Docket Text Public

Sealed Document and Entry – No Public Access

Sealed Document and Entry – Court Only Access

Attorneys should refer to the user instructions to better understand what events are found within the criminal sealed event menus and the civil sealed event menus and how to use them.

Instructions for Using the New Civil Sealed Menus

The above instructions list documents that may be filed under the specific category restriction levels of Docket Text Public (DTP), No Public Access (NPA) and Court Only Access (COA). The listed documents in each set of instructions do not include documents that are only filed by the court.
